I'm tired of COVID.
| | By Stephanie Cornwell, Editorial Assistant | | I'm tired of COVID. But instead of being pessimistic about how long the pandemic is lasting, I'm choosing to be optimistic about the future—a world where I only think about COVID when it's time for my annual vaccine. | | Today's Top Story | COVID is Not the Same As The Flu, Yet | | If we can't say goodbye to COVID for good, the next best thing is a yearly visit. But we're not there yet. It's unlikely that COVID will be eradicated, but Omicron suggests a future of less severe cases. While it's highly transmissible, Omicron's milder symptoms show that COVID could one day be like the common cold. The common cold is recurring because the virus needs a host to survive, reproduce, and spread to other people. It's just mild enough to make people sick, but not strong enough to kill them. So, experts continue to lessen the dangers of COVID rather than eliminate it. While we are not there yet, Anthony Fauci, MD, believes a less severe virus strain will become dominant, making it endemic. An endemic disease is always present in a particular population, like the flu or HIV. | Know More | So how does COVID differ from influenza? COVID's death toll is much higher than influenza's, and the long-term effects of COVID are more dangerous. While different flu strains come with the same symptoms, the signs of COVID could change slightly. | Feel Better | The CDC can track influenza's mutations and monitor how the virus changes. This allows them to predict the dominant strains and create vaccines, aka your annual flu shot. COVID is too new for this kind of foresight, but there are still things we can do: hand washing, masking, social distancing, vaccines, and boosters! | | | Who Are McDonald's Ads Targeting? | A new study looked at McDonald's Instagram posts in 15 countries of different economic statuses. The results showed that the company shared more posts in low-income countries than high-income countries. Additionally, the types of posts in low-income countries focused more on child-targeted marketing themes and price promotions, while the ads in high-income countries centered around healthy habits. Researchers urge fast-food companies to take responsibility for creating unhealthy food environments. | | What Is Relationship Trauma? | Relationship trauma refers to the symptoms similar to PTSD that someone may experience after leaving an abusive intimate relationship. Trauma can stem from emotional, physical, or sexual abuse during the relationship. Relationship trauma can have lasting psychological effects. If you are in an abusive relationship, you may consider asking your healthcare provider to set up a consultation with a therapist or contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline. | | | | | | In an interview with Verywell, Sheela Shenoi, MD, said that the mask mandates can be tiresome but necessary for keeping people safe from COVID. | | As long as this virus poses a risk to people who are vulnerable in our society—people who may be immunocompromised, people who are elderly, people with lots of medical comorbidities, children who are unvaccinated or who are not eligible for vaccination at this point—then we have to take the precautions to protect everybody. | | | | Sheela Shenoi, MD, Medical director of general infectious diseases at Yale Medicine and associate director of the office of global health | | | | | | | | You are receiving this newsletter because you subscribed to the Verywell Health newsletter.
